A Typeface Tribute to the Guest Worker Diaspora

A Typeface Tribute to the Guest Worker Diaspora
Illustration: Murathan Biliktu / Ephemera

BM Arbeiter Neue font family is inspired by the history of the diaspora of guest workers to Germany in the 1960s. Arbeiter Neue incorporates a variety of forms that are influenced by machinery, pipes, and wires.

Arbeiter Neue comes in 5 different styles: Regular, Text, Mono and two unique styles; Fett and Abstrakt. The most unique style in this font family is Arbeiter Neue Abstrakt and it was created in such a way that it seems virtually unreadable and "alien." It's the German signs in the eyes of the guest workers and the cramped town constructed of pipes and cables that they live in.
